Top 10 Weirdest Chicken Breeds

Top 10 Weirdest Chicken Breeds

As we mention chicken, perhaps what can be remembered is what we would be taking for dinner. After all, chicken meat is considered as one of the tastiest and most exquisite meats you could ever find, especially when cooked and fried with utmost skill and expertise. However, with the celebration of the National Chicken Month this September, we may have to take chickens in a different light, aside from being the usual tasty treat.

10. The Phoenix

 10

Although it may not be taken as a weird breed since Phoenix birds are cool to begin with, especially their unquenchable flames and self resurrection from the ashes, The Phoenix chicken breed has its different sense of being odd. Because their tail feathers are so long, which grows to as long as 20 feet, they have to be rested in high roosts, so that they won’t have any complications when it comes to tail growth. It became known from the Japanese breed Onagodori, which was handled and preserved for over 1000 years. Also, their molting period is two times longer than most chickens.

9. The Plymouth Rock

 9

While they do not look as rocky as you are expecting them to be, it can be comforting to know that their striped appearance does not seem to reflect their kind of personality. In fact, the Plymouth Rock is considered as a calm chicken breed that can go well with other pets and also people. Reared as a dual-purpose breed back in 1869, they are great farming chickens that offer good tasting meat, along with fast egg-laying, which is great for business. Their white and black stripe can be compared with that of a zebra.

8. The Frizzle

 8

One of women’s worst dilemmas is a frizzy hair, especially when they want to look good and fresh all the time. But with the chicken breed called the Frizzle, frizz is just an ordinary thing because its feathers are all twitched going upward, instead of the usual look where feathers are straight and going downward. It looks like an ordinary domesticated hen or rooster, it’s just that the feather is actually making things difficult for it all thanks to the feathers that cannot be treated easily, which may be otherwise easy for ladies using conditioner.

7. The Araucana

7

Even if you do not have much of an idea what the Araucana breed is all about, there is a hunch of Hispanic in its name, which actually makes it a more distinguishable kind of chicken. Because it came from Chile, you can just imagine how its ear tufts look like mustache, especially when they are facing straight to people. Its other name, the South American Rumpless, also go complementary with its physical attributes due to the absence of its tail and rump. Oh, and has it been mentioned that it lays blue eggs?

6. The Silkie

6

The Silkie at first glance can be identified as a walking cotton ball, especially when sitting down from afar. However, aside from the soft and silky feather it has, it is also considered strange because of what can be seen deep within the attractive exterior. They have blue colored bones, earlobe, and skin, which turn to almost black when cooked, and they also have five toes, something that is apart from most chicken breeds. They are also funnily identified as the chicken version of a lap dog since you can barely see its eyes, where only the beak becomes the visible part in its appearance. Yup, even the rest of its legs and feet are covered with its nice feathers.

5. The Sultan

5

Originating from the land of Turkey, the Sultan is very distinctive with its turban looking head crest, which makes it very easy to distinguish. Also, this is one of the rare breeds that have five toes on each foot, just like the Silkie from China. They look dashing in white, and they can also be found in other shades such as the sophisticated black and the daring blue.

4. The Polverara

4

You have seen the Laced Polish display its headdress for fun. This time around, the Polverara, or the Schiatta is a known crested chicken that was anciently bred somewhere in north-eastern Italy, which has a different kind of crown on its head. Instead of seeing the usual crown, you can see hair instead, which looks just like hairdos from cartoon characters like Bart Simpson or Paul Phoenix from Tekken. It also has a beard that takes its appearance from the feather, which makes them look cleaner and more rad.

3. The Laced Polish

3

There are chickens with crowns, but have you seen breeds that have long hair on them? The Polish, or Poland, is a breed that has a large crest on its head, which makes it possible to have hair close to where the crown is. The Laced Polish was even identified with David Bowie when he appeared at one of his movies or concerts, because of the hair appearance, which can be checked online. Its history of crests have immersed from Netherlands, where it actually figures. No, their head don’t look like flowers of some sort.

2. The La Fleche

2

Perhaps one of the weirdest chicken breeds that you would see is that something of the same flock has crowns of them that pose as devil’s horns. The La Fleche breed can stun you with its horn-like features that can be an interesting sight to see. And while this chicken may have an evil kind of disposition for its deceived lookers, the French people love it because of its fine meat, being served in high-class restaurants.

1. The Naked Neck

1

When you find yourself with a rafter of turkeys, you may not be able to identify this chicken breed as easy because it has similar features with them, particularly, how their neck looks like. Often mistaken as a cross breed between a chicken and a turkey, the Naked Neck has also been called as the Turken. Yes, it does not look attractive, but despite of which, who could have figured that this breed actually came from Hungary and was tended to in Germany. You can even enjoy a larger serving of fried chicken neck, in case you are planning to eat one.

10 Fun Outdoor Games for Kids|Entertainment

10 Fun Outdoor Games for Kids|Entertainment

The cooler days of fall are a great time for kids to head outside for parties. The following games from Penny Warner's book, "Kids' Outdoor Parties" (Meadowbrook Press), are great to get kids outdoors and having fun.

10. Hopscotch

10

You could use a sidewalk chalk if you are going to play on a cemented surface or a stick that you could use to draw lines on soil or land surface. Another option is water which can be good both for soil or cemented surface. All you need to do is to make or create hopscotch grid and it’s about 9 squares. There are small squares and larger ones. It is typically played by two people, but it can be arranged up to four persons or group scoring. Each player should have a stone or rock that would be used for tossing. The tossing will start on the first grid until it has reached the last grid, but it’s a take turns set-up if one loses on the first throw, the opportunity will be given to the opponent. The rule is you have to hop with a single foot or use both feet which depends on the hopscotch pattern based on the grid.

9. Frisbee Tower

9

This is a very simple game, but it requires focus, and intellectual ability. You would need mini Frisbee, or if you have toothpicks or any bunch of sticks which is equal to the size of toothpicks, it will be sufficient. Hence, you will enjoy the actual Frisbee itself if you bought one. You just have to divide the stick among the players; it could be played by 2s or even by 3s or 4s. The first player would place his or her first Frisbee in the middle of the ground, and succeeding players would place his or her on top of it until the tower topple.

8. Blind Walk

8

This is a very simple game and its very popular game at school and especially during the weekend where kids could play with their playmates before the dawn or early morning. An obstacle path will be created, and kids would line-up, and one at time each kid would have his or her turn by being blindfolded, and would have to walk on the straight path without looking.  A scoreboard will be used to record the time of each player.

7. Freeze Tag

7

It can be played in a small or large group, and it’s actually a variation of a simple tag game. Wherein if the person who is “it” tags you, you stop moving, and you’ll stay on the place where you were froze. Hence, another player in the group has the power to unfreeze you so you may continue running away from the person who may freeze tag you.

6.Pick Pocket Tag

6

A group of kids will gather as one, and would decide who would play as being “it” who has the power to tag others. The choosing can be done either by volunteering, or the typical way of starting the game. Once settled, the game start by chasing the people around who is next to you, once chased and tagged, that person will be the next who would play “it”. It’s up to you if you would want to include in your rules the no-tag-backs, or just continue doing the typical set-up. The game will be finished, once everyone feels tired.

5. Jump-Rope and Double Dutch

5

This is the favorite recess game for girls although there are boys who are participating, but since it’s mostly associated as girls’ game, it would only require jumping rope, and it’s good for any age brackets. It would start as an individual jump rope; later on it could be pair game competitions where double Dutch is performed. There would be exhibitions that can be included depending on the rules that you want to implement to make the game exciting which all girls love.

4. Kick the Can

4

It’s an exciting version and combination of hide & seek, and tag games wherein any used can be used as the primary object of the game. A person or even a group could be chosen as “it” wherein a can will be placed in the middle. The person or group who is chosen to be “it” will protect the can from the players of capturing or kicking it, otherwise, that group or individual will remain playing as “it”. However, if one has been captured, he or she will replace the person who is playing “it” and the game will continue until the non-it players are found in the holding pen.

3. Capture the Flag

3

You may need two flags for double excitement or just one flag that will be hold by “it” team. This game is played by two teams. Each team composes of certain number of players equal to the number of players on the other team. If you would decide to use two flags, the mechanics of the game is to ensure that you would get or steal the flag of the other team and bring it in your base to get the score. Hence, you may also catch a player from another team if ever they will spring up to your territory, and they will be put into your jail or territory. You can free a player or if jailbreak happens.

2. Big Foot Relay

2

You may bring old shoeboxes or any used cartoons that you could use to trace back a big foot. Cut a slit for about 4 inches on the top of the big feet where kids’ feet could sleep into it. Once it’s ready, then the race begins, until everyone in both teams are finished, then the team who finished the earliest, will be the winning team.

1. Hide and Seek

1

This is an all-time favorite of not just kids, but the best family activity. It’s similar to tag game rules, but the only difference, the person who is playing “it” would have to close his or her eyes at the back of a tree or anything that he or she can close his or her eyes, while counting up to specific numbers. Once done counting, he or she would start finding the hiding place of all players, and when one is caught, the person who is playing “it” should make sure to go back to base where he did the counting, so that person will replace him or her to play the next “it”.
