India to try and continue at Jaipur

INDIA TO TRY AND CONTINUE ITS GOOD RUN AT HOME

Young Virat Kohli will be the cynosure of all eyes as a new-look India seek to continue the team's dominating run at home in the current calendar when they take on New Zealand in the second cricket one-dayer here tomorrow. In the absence of the creme de la creme of Indian cricket, the dashing right-hander from Delhi gave enough indication of why he is the one to look for in future with a match-winning century in the opening match in Guwahati.

image

With regular stars such as skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Zaheer Khan and Harbhajan Singh being rested for the first two one-dayers, Kohli stole the limelight with a fine hundred that paved the way for India's 40-run win in the series opener. The young Kohli, going through a dream run having scored two back-to-back tons in Ranji Trophy apart from his second successive ODI century, would be keen to bat the way he has been doing of late at the Sawai Man Singh Stadium tomorrow.

image

India have a good record at this venue winning six out of 10 matches, the last being a humdinger against South Africa in February when the hosts won by one run. India have lost just one match -- against South Africa on February 27 -- in the two series it has played at home in 2010.

LARGEST DAMS IN THE WORLD

LARGEST DAMS IN THE WORLD

Three Gorges – China

image

The Three Gorges Dam in China is projected to be the absolute largest in the world. Expected to hold over 39,300,000,000 in volume, the reservoir is complete but the actual dam itself will not be completed until later this year. The construction of this dam had a huge impact on life in Sandouping, resulting not only in the relocation of dozens of villages but in the scenery as well. Because of the height of the Three Gorges Dam the mountains now look a bit lower than they actually are.

These dams are not only amongst the largest, but are considered some of the most functional, beautiful, and aesthetically pleasing in the world. Don’t hesitate to visit one if you’re ever in the area. Seeing one of the enormous dams in person will prove to be an absolutely breathtaking experience.

Syncrude Tailings – Canada

image

Located near Fort McMurray in Alberta, Canada, the Syncrude Tailings Dam is approximately 540,000,000 meters in volume. The dam is currently maintained by a company known as Syncrude Canada Ltd – a company responsible for oil extraction in the Athabasca Oil Sands. The dam serves as a barrage used to store tailings – or leftover slimes and residues – that appear as byproducts of the oil extraction operation.

Aswan Dam – Egypt

image

The Aswan Dam is actually a pair of dams – the Aswan High Dam and the Aswan Low Dam. In ancient times it was known that the River Nile would flood each summer as the waters flowed down from East Africa. As the population along the river grew it became necessary to find a way to control flooding in this area. Now the land is still fertile enough for farming and the people no longer have to worry about drought but the fields aren’t in danger of being wiped out due to flooding, either.

Fort PeckUnited States

image

The Fort Peck Dam in northeast Montana is one of six dams found on the Missouri River. Construction of this dam began in 1933 as part of the New Deal put forth by President Franklin D. Roosevelt and enabled over 11,000 workers to have gainful employment during the course of construction. The dam, which is solely responsible for the formation of Fort Peck Lake, is used to control flooding and generate power.

Ataturk Dam – Turkey

image

Completed in 1990, the Ataturk Dam in Turkey is a rock-fill dam found on the Euphrates River. Originally named the Karababa Dam, the site was later renamed in order to honor the founder of the Turkish Republic, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. The dam is responsible for irrigating the regions plains as well as for generating electricity.

Verzasca Dam – Switzerland

verzascam

The Verzasca Dam, also known as the Contra dam, was built between 1960 and 1965 in Val Verzasca, Switzerland. The dam was built by Verzasca SA, a company that generates electricity on the site and will continue to do so until at least 2046. The Lago di Vogorno reservoir is artificial, created by the dam itself, and has been responsible for causing earthquakes during times when it is filled.

Largest populated Cities in the World

Largest populated Cities of the World

People everywhere around the world build each week the equivalent of a city the size of Vancouver. It’s just a statistic from a study that claims that by the year 2030, the biggest cities in the world would end up by having huge surfaces that will contain a layer of small dimensions. This has already been started …

We only have to take a look on the data regarding the population in the biggest cities of the world, population that is sometimes bigger than those of an European state. Nobody knows where, or if this evolution will stop.

Researchers can only estimate the level of population growth in these cities, but as it happened before, numbers can be contradicted.

So, we invite you to read our Highest 25 about the most populated cities in the world.

SPICEJET

Maran takes over as Chairman of SpiceJet

After much speculation and shortly after acquiring an additional stake in SpiceJet Ltd, Kalanithi Maran, chairman and promoter of Sun Network on Monday, formally took over as the chairman of the low-cost airline.

The media baron’s associate company KAL Airways Private Ltd had recently bought an additional 7.68 per cent stake in SpiceJet for Rs 146.86 crore. Maran had acquired 31.08 million shares of SpiceJet through an off-shore market transaction. With this, he becomes the majority shareholder in the company, holding 38.66 per cent stake. The combined stake of both Maran and his associate company has gone up to 66.2 per cent in SpiceJet.

Speaking on the occasion, Maran said, “I am very optimistic about the growth in the aviation business which is the basis for SpiceJet recently placing order for 30 new Boeing 737-800NG aircraft with deliveries commencing from 2014. This is in addition to our plans to double our current fleet size to 50 aircraft by 2013.”

The agreement was signed in June between the Chennai-based industrialist and the former promoters of SpiceJet, namely, American investor Wilbur Ross, his investment companies and Bhulo Kansagara family-promoted Royal Holding Services Ltd. The deal was estimated to be worth Rs 740 crore.

SpiceJet has 13 per cent market share and operates 153 flights daily to 20 Indian cities.

MOHAMMED AZHARUDDIN

Azhar says India has a great chance to win the World Cup 2011

Mohammed Azharuddin, an ex-Indian skipper, said that he’ll be upset if India would fail on winning the 2011 cricket World Cup which is being hosting by India together with Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

Azhar said that the India team was a fine blend of talented teams and experienced campaigners who have the potential on lifting the World Cup title. So he’d really be disappointed if they will fail to do so.

The former skipper said that Sri Lanka would be the biggest threat to India since it has already become the game’s formidable following development in all departments.

He said there should be stronger regulations on controlling the match-fixing which brought cricket a bad image.

Azhar said that India earned some popularity and ill-will after the Commonwealth Games.
