Green tax touches Rs 6-crore mark in three months; MMR tops the list

Mumbai: Three months after the state government levied the green tax on vehicles, the state transport department has collected over Rs 6 crore.

Not surprisingly, Mumbai, Thane and Pune cities have recorded highest amount with figures crossing over Rs 2 crore.

Interestingly, from October 15 to December 31, 2010, Mumbai recorded collection of green tax amounting Rs 78 lakh. Similarly, areas like Thane, Mira-Bhayander, Vasai-Virar collected tax amounting Rs 67 lakh.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) -- that includes the satellite cities of Navi Mumbai, Panvel, Kalyan-Dombivli, Bhiwandi, Ambernath and Badlapur -- alone crossed the figure of Rs 2 crore. Pune collected green tax amounting to Rs 24 lakh.

It is to be noted that Mumbai and the metropolitan region have the highest number of vehicles that are registered every day. It has over 38,000 taxis and over 1 lakh autorickshaws that are expected to increase the revenue generated from green tax.

According to the transport department, the state cabinet took the decision of levying the green tax on vehicles over 15 years. The transport department generates revenue of Rs 2,500 crore every year and the target would be more than this year, sources said.

From the green tax alone, the state government expects to generate the revenue of Rs 125 crore.

According to the decision, the public transport vehicles would have to pay the tax annually after completion of 15 years and (8 years that are yet to be converted from petrol to CNG). Light vehicles like the taxis and autos have to pay Rs 7,500 annually while the heavy vehicles have to pay 10 per cent of the total annual taxes.

In case of two-wheelers that have completed 15 years, the owner is supposed to pay Rs 2,000 for five years.

In case of diesel cars, the owners have to shell out Rs 3,500 and for petrol cars the tax is Rs 3,000 for five years.
