History
The University of Hong Kong, founded in 1911, is the oldest tertiary institution in Hong Kong. It was granted a shield and a motto by the College of Arms in 1913, and throughout its history the University's visual identity has been firmly based on their display, often coupled the University's name. No other university in Hong Kong possesses a coat of arms. This is a distinction that resonates outside Hong Kong, particularly in the United Kingdom, other Commonwealth jurisdictions, and the United States. It is also a reminder of the University's antiquity, and a most dignified and effective corporate identity.
Courses offered
At present, the University of Hong Kong offers over 30 undergraduate programs covering some 50 major areas of study. These are designed so that students might strive for their personal best in their academic endeavours, while also becoming critically independent thinkers and articulate communicators.
The University of Hong Kong offers both research degrees and full-time and part-time taught postgraduate programs. Its research postgraduate programs lead to the degrees of Master of Philosophy (MPhil) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). Courses range from two to four years in length. The emphasis is on research, although many programs also include a coursework element.
The University's taught postgraduate programs lead either to a master's degree or a diploma or certificate. Courses range from one to three years in length. The emphasis is on coursework, although most courses also require the submission of a dissertation.
The university also has summer programs and options for continuing education.
Admission procedure/cycle (month/date)
There are three different ways for undergraduates to apply to HKU, depending on candidates' qualifications:
1. The Joint University Programs Admissions System (JUPAS)
2. The Non-JUPAS Admissions Scheme
3. The Direct Admissions Scheme (for direct entry to 2nd year by Associate Degree and Higher Diploma graduates)
Additionally, the University offers an Early Admissions Scheme for Secondary Six students. Submission deadlines should be found out directly from the university's website.

The basic qualification necessary for admission to research postgraduate studies is a good honours degree from this University or an equivalent qualification from a comparable institution. In addition, certain degree courses have more specific requirements. Qualifying examinations to test the applicants' abilities to follow the prescribed courses and/ or interviews may be conducted. Tentative cost of courses: There are differential composition (tuition) fees for local and non-local undergraduate students. For local students, the composition fee for the academic year 2010-2011 is HK$42,100. For non-local students, the composition fee for the academic year 2011-2012 will be HK$119,000.
Scholarships offered
A number of financial assistance schemes (details of which are available on the university's website) are available to eligible local undergraduate students.
The purpose of Postgraduate Studentships is to provide selected students with financial assistance in the form of a scholarship to study full-time for the degrees of MPhil, PhD and SJD during the prescribed periods of study.
A new scholarship scheme comprising the First in the Family Scholarships, Top Scorers Scholarships and Entrance Scholarships will be offered to outstanding Indian students admitted by the University.
Presence in India
The University of Hong Kong on 23 November 2010 celebrated the grand opening of its India Liaison Office in New Delhi to foster exchanges and student recruitment.
The number of applications from India for undergraduate degree programs at HKU increased three-fold from 2009-2010, and there are over 120 India students currently on campus. The new office is a significant cornerstone to facilitate the admission process for students and help them choose the best courses available.
