Most stunning pictures of the Earth by night

Following the NASAs Blue Marble Project, new HD images of the earth were released this week.

This project is now called Black Marble.

What is the difference between the two you might ask?

Well, this new project only captures night-time views of the Earth!

The Suomi NPP satellite completed 312 orbits and gathered 2.5 terabytes of data to get a clear shot of every parcel of the Earth’s land surface.

This satellite is capable of detecting light in a range of wavelengths from green to near-infrared and uses filtering techniques to observe dim signals such as city lights, gas flares, auroras, wildfires, and reflected moonlight.

This view gives us a clear understanding of the economic situation of Asian countries. Most lights come from the biggest economic areas whereas Mongolia and the Tibetan Plateau are in the dark.

There is a clear gap between the East and the West of the USA. The East is in the light and the West (apart from the border) is in the dark. We can clearly see the transport network in the Eastern part of the States.

Besides the Nile River and its large delta that empties in the Mediterranean Sea, and a few other areas in South Africa and the Maghreb, most of the continent is plunged into darkness.

From East to West, the European continent shows an impressive homogeneity with urban areas being slightly more illuminated than other areas.

Top 10 Weirdest Chicken Breeds

Top 10 Weirdest Chicken Breeds

As we mention chicken, perhaps what can be remembered is what we would be taking for dinner. After all, chicken meat is considered as one of the tastiest and most exquisite meats you could ever find, especially when cooked and fried with utmost skill and expertise. However, with the celebration of the National Chicken Month this September, we may have to take chickens in a different light, aside from being the usual tasty treat.

10. The Phoenix

 10

Although it may not be taken as a weird breed since Phoenix birds are cool to begin with, especially their unquenchable flames and self resurrection from the ashes, The Phoenix chicken breed has its different sense of being odd. Because their tail feathers are so long, which grows to as long as 20 feet, they have to be rested in high roosts, so that they won’t have any complications when it comes to tail growth. It became known from the Japanese breed Onagodori, which was handled and preserved for over 1000 years. Also, their molting period is two times longer than most chickens.

9. The Plymouth Rock

 9

While they do not look as rocky as you are expecting them to be, it can be comforting to know that their striped appearance does not seem to reflect their kind of personality. In fact, the Plymouth Rock is considered as a calm chicken breed that can go well with other pets and also people. Reared as a dual-purpose breed back in 1869, they are great farming chickens that offer good tasting meat, along with fast egg-laying, which is great for business. Their white and black stripe can be compared with that of a zebra.

8. The Frizzle

 8

One of women’s worst dilemmas is a frizzy hair, especially when they want to look good and fresh all the time. But with the chicken breed called the Frizzle, frizz is just an ordinary thing because its feathers are all twitched going upward, instead of the usual look where feathers are straight and going downward. It looks like an ordinary domesticated hen or rooster, it’s just that the feather is actually making things difficult for it all thanks to the feathers that cannot be treated easily, which may be otherwise easy for ladies using conditioner.

7. The Araucana

7

Even if you do not have much of an idea what the Araucana breed is all about, there is a hunch of Hispanic in its name, which actually makes it a more distinguishable kind of chicken. Because it came from Chile, you can just imagine how its ear tufts look like mustache, especially when they are facing straight to people. Its other name, the South American Rumpless, also go complementary with its physical attributes due to the absence of its tail and rump. Oh, and has it been mentioned that it lays blue eggs?

6. The Silkie

6

The Silkie at first glance can be identified as a walking cotton ball, especially when sitting down from afar. However, aside from the soft and silky feather it has, it is also considered strange because of what can be seen deep within the attractive exterior. They have blue colored bones, earlobe, and skin, which turn to almost black when cooked, and they also have five toes, something that is apart from most chicken breeds. They are also funnily identified as the chicken version of a lap dog since you can barely see its eyes, where only the beak becomes the visible part in its appearance. Yup, even the rest of its legs and feet are covered with its nice feathers.

5. The Sultan

5

Originating from the land of Turkey, the Sultan is very distinctive with its turban looking head crest, which makes it very easy to distinguish. Also, this is one of the rare breeds that have five toes on each foot, just like the Silkie from China. They look dashing in white, and they can also be found in other shades such as the sophisticated black and the daring blue.

4. The Polverara

4

You have seen the Laced Polish display its headdress for fun. This time around, the Polverara, or the Schiatta is a known crested chicken that was anciently bred somewhere in north-eastern Italy, which has a different kind of crown on its head. Instead of seeing the usual crown, you can see hair instead, which looks just like hairdos from cartoon characters like Bart Simpson or Paul Phoenix from Tekken. It also has a beard that takes its appearance from the feather, which makes them look cleaner and more rad.

3. The Laced Polish

3

There are chickens with crowns, but have you seen breeds that have long hair on them? The Polish, or Poland, is a breed that has a large crest on its head, which makes it possible to have hair close to where the crown is. The Laced Polish was even identified with David Bowie when he appeared at one of his movies or concerts, because of the hair appearance, which can be checked online. Its history of crests have immersed from Netherlands, where it actually figures. No, their head don’t look like flowers of some sort.

2. The La Fleche

2

Perhaps one of the weirdest chicken breeds that you would see is that something of the same flock has crowns of them that pose as devil’s horns. The La Fleche breed can stun you with its horn-like features that can be an interesting sight to see. And while this chicken may have an evil kind of disposition for its deceived lookers, the French people love it because of its fine meat, being served in high-class restaurants.

1. The Naked Neck

1

When you find yourself with a rafter of turkeys, you may not be able to identify this chicken breed as easy because it has similar features with them, particularly, how their neck looks like. Often mistaken as a cross breed between a chicken and a turkey, the Naked Neck has also been called as the Turken. Yes, it does not look attractive, but despite of which, who could have figured that this breed actually came from Hungary and was tended to in Germany. You can even enjoy a larger serving of fried chicken neck, in case you are planning to eat one.

10 Fun Outdoor Games for Kids|Entertainment

10 Fun Outdoor Games for Kids|Entertainment

The cooler days of fall are a great time for kids to head outside for parties. The following games from Penny Warner's book, "Kids' Outdoor Parties" (Meadowbrook Press), are great to get kids outdoors and having fun.

10. Hopscotch

10

You could use a sidewalk chalk if you are going to play on a cemented surface or a stick that you could use to draw lines on soil or land surface. Another option is water which can be good both for soil or cemented surface. All you need to do is to make or create hopscotch grid and it’s about 9 squares. There are small squares and larger ones. It is typically played by two people, but it can be arranged up to four persons or group scoring. Each player should have a stone or rock that would be used for tossing. The tossing will start on the first grid until it has reached the last grid, but it’s a take turns set-up if one loses on the first throw, the opportunity will be given to the opponent. The rule is you have to hop with a single foot or use both feet which depends on the hopscotch pattern based on the grid.

9. Frisbee Tower

9

This is a very simple game, but it requires focus, and intellectual ability. You would need mini Frisbee, or if you have toothpicks or any bunch of sticks which is equal to the size of toothpicks, it will be sufficient. Hence, you will enjoy the actual Frisbee itself if you bought one. You just have to divide the stick among the players; it could be played by 2s or even by 3s or 4s. The first player would place his or her first Frisbee in the middle of the ground, and succeeding players would place his or her on top of it until the tower topple.

8. Blind Walk

8

This is a very simple game and its very popular game at school and especially during the weekend where kids could play with their playmates before the dawn or early morning. An obstacle path will be created, and kids would line-up, and one at time each kid would have his or her turn by being blindfolded, and would have to walk on the straight path without looking.  A scoreboard will be used to record the time of each player.

7. Freeze Tag

7

It can be played in a small or large group, and it’s actually a variation of a simple tag game. Wherein if the person who is “it” tags you, you stop moving, and you’ll stay on the place where you were froze. Hence, another player in the group has the power to unfreeze you so you may continue running away from the person who may freeze tag you.

6.Pick Pocket Tag

6

A group of kids will gather as one, and would decide who would play as being “it” who has the power to tag others. The choosing can be done either by volunteering, or the typical way of starting the game. Once settled, the game start by chasing the people around who is next to you, once chased and tagged, that person will be the next who would play “it”. It’s up to you if you would want to include in your rules the no-tag-backs, or just continue doing the typical set-up. The game will be finished, once everyone feels tired.

5. Jump-Rope and Double Dutch

5

This is the favorite recess game for girls although there are boys who are participating, but since it’s mostly associated as girls’ game, it would only require jumping rope, and it’s good for any age brackets. It would start as an individual jump rope; later on it could be pair game competitions where double Dutch is performed. There would be exhibitions that can be included depending on the rules that you want to implement to make the game exciting which all girls love.

4. Kick the Can

4

It’s an exciting version and combination of hide & seek, and tag games wherein any used can be used as the primary object of the game. A person or even a group could be chosen as “it” wherein a can will be placed in the middle. The person or group who is chosen to be “it” will protect the can from the players of capturing or kicking it, otherwise, that group or individual will remain playing as “it”. However, if one has been captured, he or she will replace the person who is playing “it” and the game will continue until the non-it players are found in the holding pen.

3. Capture the Flag

3

You may need two flags for double excitement or just one flag that will be hold by “it” team. This game is played by two teams. Each team composes of certain number of players equal to the number of players on the other team. If you would decide to use two flags, the mechanics of the game is to ensure that you would get or steal the flag of the other team and bring it in your base to get the score. Hence, you may also catch a player from another team if ever they will spring up to your territory, and they will be put into your jail or territory. You can free a player or if jailbreak happens.

2. Big Foot Relay

2

You may bring old shoeboxes or any used cartoons that you could use to trace back a big foot. Cut a slit for about 4 inches on the top of the big feet where kids’ feet could sleep into it. Once it’s ready, then the race begins, until everyone in both teams are finished, then the team who finished the earliest, will be the winning team.

1. Hide and Seek

1

This is an all-time favorite of not just kids, but the best family activity. It’s similar to tag game rules, but the only difference, the person who is playing “it” would have to close his or her eyes at the back of a tree or anything that he or she can close his or her eyes, while counting up to specific numbers. Once done counting, he or she would start finding the hiding place of all players, and when one is caught, the person who is playing “it” should make sure to go back to base where he did the counting, so that person will replace him or her to play the next “it”.

Top 10 ways to prevent breast cancer\Health

Top 10 ways to prevent breast cancer\Health

10.-Breastfeed-Your-Baby-e1345645207896

Breast Cancer Prevention

According to the American Cancer Society, nearly 200,000 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed and more than 40,000 women will die of breast cancer in the US this year. Though experts say there is no sure way to prevent the potentially fatal disease, you can do much to reduce your risk of developing it significantly. Here are the top 10 ways to lower your chances of getting breast cancer.

Lose weight

woman-in-pink-exercising

Being overweight or obese has been found to increase breast cancer risk, especially for women after menopause, when -- because the ovaries stop producing estrogen -- most of a woman's estrogen comes from fat tissue. (Elevated estrogen levels may raise the risk of breast cancer.) Research also indicates that women who gain weight as an adult are at a higher risk for breast cancer than women who have been overweight since childhood. Regardless, if you are overweight, talk to your doctor or a registered dietician about dietary changes that can help you shed pounds and achieve a healthy body weight. Incorporating daily physical activity is another effective and healthy way to lose weight.

Eat right

px312096

Though studies are at odds on whether or not fat intake is specifically linked to breast cancer, experts do agree that a high-fat diet can lead to weight gain. The American Cancer Society suggests eating a balanced diet that is based on plant foods, including fruits and vegetables, whole grains and low-fat proteins, while limiting consumption of processed foods and red meats.

Exercise daily

exercise-strength

Daily physical activity is not only essential for overall health, it also can reduce the risk of breast cancer. According to a study from the Women's Health Initiative, as little as 1.25 to 2.5 hours of brisk walking per week can reduce a woman's risk of breast cancer by 18 percent, while walking 10 hours per week can reduce the risk even more. You also can run, bike, swim, hike and play sports to mix up your fitness routine and stay motivated. Aim for 45 to 60 minutes of exercise or moderate physical activity at least five days per week.

Limit your alcohol use

Alcohol consumption is clearly linked to an increased risk of developing breast cancer (as well as other types of cancer), and the risk increases with the amount of alcohol consumed. Compared with non-drinkers, women who consume one alcoholic drink a day have a very small increase in breast cancer risk, while women who have two to five drinks daily have about one-and-a-half times the risk of nondrinkers. If you are going to drink, limit your intake to one drink per day.

Breastfeed your baby

Research suggests that women who breastfeed their babies may have a slightly lower risk of developing breast cancer, especially if they continue breastfeeding for up to two years. Though breastfeeding for this long is uncommon in the United States, breastfeeding for even a few months is recommended. Experts believe that breastfeeding reduces a woman's risk of breast cancer because it also reduces the total number of menstrual cycles a woman experiences, exposing her to lower levels of hormones related to breast cancer risk.

Don't take postmenopausal hormone therapy

Research published in the April 2007 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine indicates that the sharp decline in the rate of new breast cancer cases reported in 2003 may be related to a national decline in the use of hormone replacement therapy (HRT). The study looked at the breast cancer incidence rates and HRT prescription rates after research was reported linking HRT to higher risks for breast cancer, heart disease, stroke, blood clots and urinary incontinence among women using HRT that contained both estrogen and progestin. Talk to your doctor about alternatives to HRT if you are menopausal or reaching menopause and feeling challenged by the symptoms related to menopausal hormone changes.

Stay away from secondhand smoke

Though research has not shown smokers to be an increased risk for breast cancer, studies have suggested that high concentrations of secondhand smoke can cause breast cancer in rodents. Further, a 2005 report from the California Environmental Protection Agency concludes that there is a causal association between secondhand smoke and breast cancer in younger, primarily premenopausal women. Since smoking and secondhand smoke are related to other types of cancer and medical conditions, kicking the habit will prove beneficial in reducing your risk of breast cancer as well as improving your overall health.

Avoid environmental carcinogens

Scientists are hard at work researching the link between environmental compounds and breast cancer. Of special interest are environmental substances found in lab studies to have estrogen-like properties, which theoretically could increase breast cancer risk. For example, substances found in some plastics, certain cosmetics and personal-care products, pesticides (such as DDE) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) seem to possess estrogen-like properties. A strong link between environmental compounds and breast cancer has not yet been found, but experts suggest avoiding suspect substances to be safe.

See your healthcare provider for a clinical breast exam

In addition to monthly breast self exams, experts recommend that women see their healthcare providers to get clinical breast exams every three years if they're under 40 and every year if they're 40 or older. Healthcare providers can detect changes that women miss when doing breast self exams. They can also provide women with information on breast cancer prevention, taking family history and lifestyle into account. Early detection is crucial in preventing breast cancer from spreading and becoming more challenging to treat successfully.

Get a mammogram

Breast self exams are an effective way for you to become familiar with how your breasts look and feel so you can be aware of any changes that may indicate breast cancer. Mammograms, however, are the gold standard for detecting breast cancer and are recommended for women starting at age 40, or sooner if a healthcare provider needs to rule out breast cancer due to changes in the breast. Though a mammogram can't prevent breast cancer, it can detect the disease in its earliest stages and prevent it from spreading and becoming a life-threatening condition.

Sonia Gandhi named world's 6th most powerful woman in 2012/News

Sonia Gandhi named world's 6th most powerful woman in 2012/News

Congress party president Sonia Gandhi was today ranked the sixth most powerful woman in the world, ahead of US First Lady Michelle Obama, by Forbes magazine in its list of 100 influential women, which was topped by German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Gandhi, 65, is among the five Indian women who have been named in the 'World's 100 Most Powerful Women' list released by Forbes today. The UPA chairperson was ranked 7th last year.

Giving Gandhi company is Chairman and CEO, PepsiCo Indra Nooyi who was ranked at 12th followed by Cisco Systems Chief Technology and Strategy Officer Padmasree Warrior at 58th place, ICICI Bank Managing Director and CEO Chanda Kochhar at 59th and Biocon founder Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw at 80th rank.

Forbes said Gandhi the "one-time heir to the Nehru-Gandhi political dynasty", successfully underwent a surgery last year and was "back in fighting spirit last month when she publicly reprimanded a fellow parliamentarian during session who had criticised her party's handling of this summer's rioting in Assam."

The longest serving chief in the Congress party's history, Gandhi has had to defend herself and the party after a spate of key assembly elections this year, blaming the drubbing on weak candidates and state party organisations.

"Lauded for overseeing heavy economic growth, she is also criticized for tolerating political corruption and failing to forge connections with India's fastest-growing demographic--younger voters," the publication said.

An avid scholar of the arts, Gandhi holds a degree in oil painting conservation.

Merkel occupied the spot of the world's most powerful woman for the second year in a row. Calling her the "Iron Lady" of Europe, Forbes said she is the lead player in the eurozone economic drama that continues to threaten global markets.

"As Greece, Spain, Italy and Portugal have teetered on the brink of an economic collapse, she (Merkel) has vowed to do everything in her power to preserve the 17-country European Union," Forbes said.

Merkel has been the German chancellor since 2005, and her recent public approval ratings soared to near 70 per cent –a good sign leading into the general election in the fall of 2013. Merkel is embracing the Internet, and last fall launched a YouTube channel, Die Bundesregierung, where she directly answers citizens' questions, the publication added.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has been ranked second in the list, followed by Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff at number three, New York Times Executive Editor Jill Abramson at 5 and Obama at 7.

Pepsi Co's 56-year-old Indian-origin CEO Nooyi has been ranked 12 in the list. Terming her the "superstar CEO", Forbes said Nooyi last year returned USD 5.6 billion to shareholders, when PepsiCo net revenue grew 14 per cent to USD 66 billion.

"But with gain comes pain: Languishing stock at the snack-and-soda giant and diminishing market share to rival Coca-Cola have put Nooyi in the hot seat," Forbes said.

Noting that "big changes are in the works" at Pepsi Co, Forbes said Nooyi cut three per cent of PepsiCo's global workforce to reduce costs and upped the marketing budget for core brands by USD 500 to USD 600 million.

Nooyi also reshuffled management of top executives, a move that may set up her successor.

Forbes said Cisco's 51-year-old Warrior took on the expanded role as Strategy officer in June, after five years as CTO, and "insiders say the move could indicate she's being groomed for the top spot."

Warrior is responsible for all deals activity as one of the most acquisitive firms in technology reconfigures its business strategy.

Kochhar, 50, the first woman to run ICICI Bank, oversees assets of USD 93 billion, more than 2,750 branches in India and the bank's presence in 19 countries. Kocchar joined ICICI in 1984 straight out of business school and is credited with building the bank's retail arm from scratch. In 2009, she became its youngest CEO at age 47.

"Today she's pursuing a new strategy, prioritising day-to-day banking business through its branches rather than big-ticket deals," Forbes said.

Forbes said Shaw, 59 is India's first biotech entrepreneur, who founded Biocon in 1978 when she was just 25-years-old.

Since then Biocon has become only the second Indian firm to list a one billion dollar IPO on its first day of trading and is currently the country's 11th largest pharmaceutical company with a market capitalisation of USD 66.8 billion.

Among the other power women making it to list is Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg at number 10, media mogul Oprah Winfrey at 11, singer Lady Gaga at rank 14, Myanmar's pro-democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi (19), newly appointed Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer (21), UK's Queen Elizabeth (26), Harvard University President Drew Faust (63), actress Angelina Jolie (66) and British author J K Rowling (78).

In the crucial election year, US First Lady Michelle Obama has been more popular than her husband, Forbes said.

Michelle's positive approval ratings register at 66 per cent while her husband's term average has hovered just below 50 per cent.

"The First Lady keeps a high profile with her mission to end childhood obesity, her commitment to military families and her stylish fashion picks," Forbes said.

Sixteen women enter the list for the first time, including singer Jennifer Lopez, former US Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann, Meg Whitman of HP and Marissa Mayer of Yahoo.

"This year's Power Women exert influence in very different ways, and to very different ends, and all with very different impacts on the global community," said Moira Forbes, president of Forbes Woman.

"Whether leading multi-billion-dollar companies, governing countries, shaping the cultural fabric of our lives, or spearheading humanitarian initiatives, collectively these women are changing the planet in profoundly powerful and dynamic ways."

10 Things to Expect with Microsoft Office 2013 (Office 15)

Perhaps one of the things that changed the face of computing altogether is the appearance of office applications that you just cannot live without. Think of how complicated your work would be without MS Word to help you create documents and letters, MS PowerPoint to assist you in making persuasive presentations, MS Access to make databases and forms for business, MS Excel in generating graphs, charts, and tables while using figures and numbers in gearing up company decisions, and other applications such as Outlook, OneNote, Publisher, and others to name a few. With the appearance of the new Office 15 Beta being available for preview, there are 10 things to expect with Microsoft Office 2013 even if you have not installed it into your PCs or laptops yet.

10. Appearance Will Be Different

Thanks to the development of the Windows 8 Operating System Platform, other integrations such as Microsoft Office will also undergo the same kind of facelift in order for it to look just as savvy as the new OS in the market. Expect to see lesser lines, more colors, and cooler animations that could make you think of using the system as if you are not in front of a computer.

9. Working Environments Will Be More Connected

Due to the trends of cloud computing, mobile integration, and multi-device support, Microsoft Office 2013 takes a leap into the advanced networking world where you could take advantage of being hooked whether you are using a PC, a laptop, or even a smartphone. All you need to have is a Windows Live ID in order to have your settings brought along with you, even if you are using someone else’s computer.

8. Requirements Will Be More Demanding

Expect that since the new MS Office will provide better performance and look to the office user, more demanding requirements will be asked in order to make every application smooth sailing, together with the OS that makes it shine better. Processor speed now needs to be about 1GHz or greater, RAM now demands 1GB for 32-bit and twice in 64-bit, Windows 7 or 8 can run it (yup, Windows XP and Vista have to pass on this one), graphics should be on DirectX10, and you should have a disk space of 3.5GB.

7. Flexibility is on the Rocks

Back in Office 2010, you need to have the Office 365 along with the application suite in order for you to use certain services such as Exchange Online, sharing and storing files online with SkyDrive, and checking out email over the phone. This time around, with your MS Office 2013 licensed copy, you can now tap into SkyDrive and share and store files online by just having your Windows Live account active and kicking.

6. Business Solutions Will Be More Adaptable

In case that you like to maximize your cloud-computing services to a higher level where you intend to keep yourself connected with workmates, peers, and other groups, then availing the Office 365 Suite should help you keep things going. You may choose to have the Office 365 Home Premium, Small Business Premium, ProPlus, and Enterprise, all different based on PCs to use it, size of SkyDrives to utilize, along with additional corporate features to work with such as professional email, HD video conferencing, and also multi-linking programs such as SharePoint and Lync.

5. Other Systems Will Take Benefit

It is part of reality that not all users prefer to use Windows Mobile, or a Windows PC just to get themselves going. However, since there are many users that recognize the functionality and value of MS Office in everyday activity, others like Mac users, and even Android or iOS owners should be more than happier that the Office 2013 will also be available to them.

4. Release Will Attract Technocrats, Fans, and Curious Cats

Since the MS Office 2013 will come out perfectly compatible with the Windows 8 Operating System, people from all walks of office and tech life will flock at the time this office suite becomes available for purchase. Once tech bloggers and product reviewers share word on how the new Office 15 is worth the curiosity, even letting users catch the preview, many may save money as early as now and anticipate the next best thing in computing.

3. Release Will Create Tension among Fans

Microsoft done one of the best things when it comes to making people excited and making MS Office 2013 the next buzz in town. Imagine that they have conducted market and consumer previews, only to have the downloaded copy become obsolete where all data, including settings, and other personal stuff will be deleted. Oh how furious they will be that they would demand MS to quickly push the official release, having no idea when it will be out in the market.

2. Products Will Be More Expensive

You have to anticipate that since this is a new system and features have been hyped up a lot, along with looks being sleeker, and updates are now on the roll, the price will be more expensive than ever. Nevertheless, knowing that it could simplify your office life a lot more, the cash you will shell out will be worth every penny.

1. You Will Enjoy This Release

With everything said about what can be expected with the newest MS Office release, there is guarantee that all users, fans or just mediocre users alike, will enjoy this latest offering from Microsoft.
