History
King's College London was founded by King George IV and the Duke of Wellington (then Prime Minister) in 1829 as a university college in the tradition of the Church of England. It now welcomes staff and students of all faiths and beliefs.
King's professors played a major part in nineteenth-century science, and in extending higher education to women, working men and through evening classes.
The College has grown and developed through mergers with several institutions who have their own distinguished histories. These include the United Medical and Dental Schools of Guy's and St Thomas' Hospitals, Chelsea College, Queen Elizabeth College, and the Institute of Psychiatry.
King's College London is dedicated to the advancement of knowledge, learning and understanding in the service of society.
Courses offered
King's College offers a variety of undergraduate and postgraduate courses. As a student at King's, you have flexibility and choice so your degree programme can be tailored to your interests. Most programmes enable you to take optional modules in addition to compulsory core modules.
King's awards three types of degrees for undergraduates:
- Single honors - modules taken in one subject area
- Joint honors - modules taken in two subjects of approximate equal weighting
- Major/minor honors - at least half of modules are in the major subject and a quarter in the supporting subject
KCL offers an extensive range of postgraduate-level qualifications. Its program encompass pioneering research and world-class teaching and takes traditional subjects forward through interdisciplinary approaches such as business and cultural links, and the use of digital tools in the humanities.
King's currently has the following nine constituent Schools of Study:

Admission procedure/cycle (month/date): For all full-time undergraduate higher education courses at universities and colleges in the UK, you must make an online application via the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS).

When applying for postgraduate study it is important to consider availability of finances for both tuition fees and living costs. Sources of finance are wide-ranging and vary for individual students. The majority of students on taught or research programs pay their tuition fees through private sources, whether by industrial sponsorship, borrowed money, or scholarships from agencies and charities. However, King's administers and provides an extensive range of funding opportunities throughout the year.
Presence in India
The King's India Institute, founded in 2008, provides a focal point for India-related activities across a range of academic disciplines. Promoting an understanding of India and developing the profile of Indian Studies at the university level in the UK, the Institute coordinates and develops India-related research capabilities and India-focused programs of study at King's, while also building links with Indian organizations in education, the cultural and creative sectors, business and government. Through these activities, and as part of the College's broader internationalization strategy, the Institute aims to contribute to a growing interdisciplinary interest in India among both students and academics at King's.
King's has a network of representatives in India who are able to provide specialist advice on the programs that KCL offers and how to apply for them. The representatives can also offer expertise in assisting students' preparations for coming to the UK, and with entry clearance procedures.
