History

Kyoto Imperial University was founded by Imperial Ordinance on the 18th of June 1897, the second university to be established in Japan.

Within ten years of the founding of the University, the Colleges of Science and Engineering, Law, Medicine, and Letters were opened. In July 1914, the College of Science and Engineering was divided into the College of Science and the College of Engineering, giving the University five Colleges. In accordance with the promulgation of the Imperial University Law, the Colleges were reorganized in February 1919 to comprise the Faculties of Law, Medicine, Engineering, Letters, and Science, and in the following May the Faculty of Economics was established.

As of 2004, Kyoto University has ten Faculties, sixteen Graduate Schools, thirteen Research Institutes, and twenty-one Research and Educational Centers.

Scholarships offered

1. For those who wish to study at Kyoto University, the following scholarships are available:
   Foreign Government Scholarship - There are a number of international students studying on foreign government scholarships at Kyoto University. Currently, students from Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, etc. are studying on such scholarships. For further information, contact the appropriate agency in your country.
2. Honors Scholarship (Gakushushoreihi) - Privately financed international students currently studying at a university in Japan are eligible to apply for an Honors Scholarship which Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) offers to help them with their academic work and research in Japan.
3. Scholarship for Short-Term Study in Japan - International students who are accepted by a Japanese university under a student exchange agreement between the Japanese host university and their home universities abroad are eligible to apply for the Scholarship for Short-Term Study in Japan provided by JASSO.
4. Scholarships from Private Foundations - There are two types of scholarships from private foundations: those for which the applicant submits an application through the University, and those for which the applicant submits an application directly to the sponsoring organization.

However, the selection process for these scholarships is very competitive. Moreover, except for a few scholarships, applications may only be submitted after entering Kyoto University. Therefore, it is necessary to have enough financial resources prior to entering Kyoto University.
