History
Located in historic Providence, Rhode Island and founded in 1764, Brown University (commonly known as Brown) is the seventh-oldest college in the United States. Brown is an independent, coeducational Ivy League institution comprising undergraduate and graduate programmes, plus the Alpert Medical School and the School of Engineering.

Courses offered
Offering approximately 2,000 courses each year in more than 40 academic departments, Brown attracts, challenges, and cultivates independent thinkers with the power and drive to create personally meaningful lives.
Undergraduates pursue bachelor's degrees in more than 70 concentrations, ranging from Egyptology to cognitive neuroscience. Undergraduates at Brown are responsible for designing individualised programmes of study across multiple departments. A strong advising network helps students engage fully with the Brown curriculum.
Brown's Graduate School includes 48 doctoral programmes and 24 master's programmes. Graduate students work side-by-side with faculty who are leaders in their fields.
Admission procedure/cycle (month/date)
In May, 2008, Brown became a member of the consortium of colleges and universities belonging to the Common Application. All applicants for undergraduate admission are now required to submit the Brown Supplement for First-Year Applicants in addition to the appropriate forms of the Common Application First-Year Application. The Brown Application to the college will no longer be produced. Please check with the university for more information.
If you apply under Brown's Early Decision programme your application must be postmarked no later than November 1.
If you apply under Brown's Regular Decision programme your application must be postmarked no later than January 1.
If you apply under Brown's Transfer admission programme your application must be postmarked no later than March 1.
Graduates of non-US colleges and universities who have completed the equivalent of a US bachelor's degree may apply for admission to the Brown University Graduate School. Along with the application, international applicants must provide the Graduate School with original documents or official certified copies indicating the nature and scope of their educational programme. Brown University tuition for regular full-time graduate students in the 2010-2011 academic year was $39,928. Master's degree students must pay tuition for a minimum of one year of full-time study. Some programmes require more than the minimum of one year of full-time study. PhD students must pay tuition for the equivalent of three years of full-time study. Scholarships offered
Brown has a need-blind admission policy for all US citizens and permanent residents.
Eligibility for aid from Brown is solely based on financial need. In accordance with Ivy League policy, Brown does not offer aid based on academic achievement, athletic ability, or any other form of merit.

Presence in India
Many Brown students choose to study abroad in their junior year. Through the Office of International Programs, students choose the programme which best suits their academic interests. Brown's exchange programme with St. Stephen's and Lady Sri Ram colleges sends students to St. Stephen's and Lady Sri Ram and receives faculty from both colleges. As an exchange programme, Brown's programme in Delhi differs from some other study abroad programmes in India which have study centres and living quarters, and provide their own courses. Students on the Brown programme take regular Indian college courses, independent studies with professors, and follow the normal academic schedule of St. Stephen's or Lady Sri Ram.
The Brown in India Program is designed to provide students the opportunity for study in the intimate atmosphere of a small Indian college with maximum interaction with the host national students.
