An intense months-long drought through November drained the mighty Negro river -- a tributary of the Amazon -- to its lowest since records began in 1902, drying up the network of water that is the lifeblood of Brazil's huge Amazonas state. Ecuador's Tungurahua volcano spews molten rocks and large clouds of gas and ash near Banos, 178 km (111 miles) south of Quito. Tungurahua, which means "Throat of Fire" in the local Quechua language, has been classified as active since 1999, and produced a strong eruption in 2008. It is one of Ecuador's eight active volcanoes.

In the 40 years since Cancun was founded, countless acres of mangrove forests up and down Mexico's Caribbean Coast have been lost - and the destruction continues. Now many scientists say that mangrove forests can help slow climate change, and are desperate to save them.

Rescue workers try to push a humpback whale that had became stranded back out to sea at Geriba beach in Buzios, 192 kilometers (119 miles) from Rio de Janeiro. The whales migrate north from Antarctica to mate from July to November off the coast of Brazil.

Hundreds of Belizians and international supporters gather on an island to form a message on the Barrier Reef off the coast of Belize City. The message, which was to call on humanity to be in harmony with the natural world, was created on the final day of the three-day Belize Reef Summit and is part of the launch of the Harmony Initiative, a partnership between the film "Harmony" narrated by Britain's Prince Charles and the Global Campaign for Climate Action.
