Amidst the hills of one of the oldest mountain ranges, Aravali, is located this famous city, Alwar. The city, which was popular as Mewar, in the past, presents one of the scenic places in the state of Rajasthan. Alwar falls in the eastern part of Rajasthan and close to the Haryana state border. The place is surrounded by the hills covering some thick forests and lakes. Alwar has two versions of the history. On one hand this place, called Matasya Desh, dates back to the ancient period, 1500 B.C. It has been referred in the epic Mahabharata as the place where the victorious Pandavas spent their last years of exile. The latter version gives credit to the Kachh family. The people, courageously, holded against the foreign invasions till 13th century A.D. The city finally came under Muslim rule and it was not until the year 1771, that the Kuchwaha ruler, aharaja Pratap Singh, won it back. The city thus, has been influenced by different cultures and leadership.
Tourist Attractions At Alwar
There are many tourist places located in the city where one can spend a good time. Some of these places are enlisted below :
City Palace : The City Palace is a wonderful monument that features Rajput and Mughal style of Architecture. The palace complex has massive gates and marble pavilions standing on lotus flower shaped bases. There is a bautiful courtyard in the centre and a massive tank that provides the water supply. The palace was built in 1793 A.D., by Bakhtawar Singh. This grand structure, at present holds several government offices.
The Fort : The fort stands on top of a hill and is about 600 metres above the city. The fort walls are spread 5 kms from north to south and 1.6 kilometres east to west. The fort is provided with a large number of towers, large and small and there are numerous holes for musketry, on all sides. It has six gates, that mark as regular entrances.
Government Museum : The museum forms a part of the City Palace Complex and is housed in the top floor of the building. The museum has a great collection of articles belonging to the royal family of Alwar. The museum also exhibits some great manuscripts including that of Gulistan, Shahnama and a manuscript on the life of mughal emperor Babur.
Jaisamand Lake : The lake is the second biggest artificial lake of the world. It was built by Maharaja Jai Singh in the year in the year 1910.
Rani Moosi Chhatri : The cenotaph - Rani Moosi Chhatri, is a memorial built in the memory of Moosi Rani, the wife of erstwhile Maharaja, Bakhtawar Singh. The cenotaph is built in an Indo-Islamic style and its construction took about 9 years to complete. It is a double storey structures that stands on pillar, has arches, pavilions and has multiple domes covering it.
How To Reach
By Air : Alwar may be reached by boarding in a flight either at the national capital Delhi or at Jaipur. Jaipur Airport is a little closer, some 148 kms from Alwar. Delhi Airport is about 154 kms away.
By Rail : Alwar has a railway station located a couple of kilometres towards the east of the town. Trains from Delhi, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Ahmedabad, Deeg and Ajmer regular reach the station. One of the most featured train travels, Fairy Queen, renders its service to Alwar.
By Road : A bus stand located in the west of the town offers long distance travel. Available are bus services from Delhi and Jaipur.
Places Where You Can Stay
A good number of budget hotels flourish in the Alwar region. Deluxe and super deluxe hotels are very few but offer great accommodation facilities. Some renowned places to stay at Alwar include:
