While Samsung and Sony Ericsson work hard to deliver the world's thinnest Android smartphone, NEC has silently taken the lead.

Their MEDIAS N-04C device is only 7.7mm thick, compared to the Galaxy S II (8.5mm) and Xperia arc (8.7mm).

No one could foresee this turn of events, as the electronics manufacturer is not generally renowned for sleek devices shapes.

In this respect, NEC's previous Touchnote or Smartia devices were pretty bulky and did not foreshadow in any way the MEDIAS smartphone.

According to ‘Draft life with blog,’ the thinnest Android smartphone to date, NEC's MEDIAS N-04C is expected to hit the Japanese market on February 24th through NTT Docomo.

Even though the Japanese mobile phone market is more technologically advanced than any other market in the world, it is still a surprising fact for a company such as NEC, which is not considered a top-tier handset manufacturer.

The device is expected to be retailed by NTT Docomo, one of Japan's major carriers and is said to be available in two simple color schemes: Black and White

MEDIAS N-04C hasn't been detailed in full, but so far we know that it has a 4-inch capacitive touchscreen display, 7.7mm thick body, 1Seg TV Tuner and Felica NFC service.

Furthermore, the smartphone will likely run Android 2.2 Froyo, but rumors speculate that the device might get the Gingerbread update soon after its official launch.

There's no word on the price tag yet, but more details will be unveiled at the NTT Docomo press event on Thursday, February 24th, when the phone is expected to be officially introduced.

This week, NTT Docomo will reveal its entire phone and smartphone 2011 lineup for the Japanese market. Unfortunately, there are slim chances that any of the unveiled devices will make their entrance on other markets.
