Google deletes 150000 Gmail Email Accounts Data By Mistake

About 150,000 Gmail users gets the shock of their lives when they try to login to their Gmail account. Once they logs in they found that all their accounts information were gone including every email, application, contact and calendar information.

Google confirmed today that around 150,000 users were thought to have been affected. Google technicians spent several frantic hours trying to restore the service which is used by an estimated around 200 million people worldwide. Google said it has already fixed the fault for some users and restored the missing data.

The problem first arose late yesterday when thousands users logged onto their accounts, only to find all their personal information had been erased. Many found that their accounts had been effectively reset, and they were greeted by the message Google welcomes new users with.

Their frustration swiftly found its way onto online message boards where they complained that everything had been lost.

One frustrated user wrote: ‘I have lost ALL on my emails/folders etc from Gmail. Why would this happen? How can I restore everything?’

Another said: ‘All my account settings, email, labels, contacts etc has just disappeared’.

One user, LibertyGirlLondon, wrote in a blog post: ‘It is clear from the Gmail forums and Twitter that hundreds if not thousands of people have had their Gmail accounts compromised. “A firm believer in the concept of cloud computing, it never occurred to me that my Gmail account could one day disappear.” She says

With the number of complaints continuing to rise, a Google worker called Michelle left a message saying: ‘We’re looking into this issue right now. I know how important your messages are to you. Thanks for reporting on the forum.’

Earlier today a Google spokesman told the Huffington Post that they have already fixed the problem for some individuals. “Our engineers are working as quickly as possible and we hope to have everything back to normal soon. We’re very sorry for the inconvenience to our customers”

Initial estimates were that 0.23 per cent of all users were affected, but this was revised down by Google to 0.08 per cent, or around 150,000 users.

Gmail has suffered from outages in the past, but there has never been a reported problem of entire accounts being deleted on such a scale. In 2009, in the most severe outage, the service went offline for 2.5 hours with many complaining they used the system for work.

At the time it forced Google vice president Ben Treynor to issue a statement saying: “We’re committed to keeping events like today’s notable for their rarity”
