World Record Pancake Day - 8th March | Guinness World Record

World Record Pancake Day - 8th March | Guinness World Record

Today is Shrove Tuesday, or "Pancake Day" as it is commonly known in many English-speaking countries. It is the last day before Lent, when many people have historically given up rich and fatty foods for 40 days, and pancakes are a great way to use up these foods, such as milk, eggs, and sugar - hence the association.

Over the years, there have been many records set making or tossing pancakes - so let's take a look at a few of the most memorable!

The largest pancake was created in Rochdale, Manchester, UK in 1994, by the Co-Operative Union, Ltd. Measuring 15.01 m (49 ft 3 in) in diameter and 2.5 cm (1 in) thick, the pancake weighed 3 tonnes (6,614 lb), and took more than just a frying pan to flip over!

Looking now at quantity rather than size, in a 2009 event at Centennial Olympic Park, Atlanta, USA, Batter Blaster LLC made the most pancakes in 8 hours by a team, with 76382 in total. 175 volunteers using 37 gridddle stations cooked the pancakes, and served approximately 20,000 people.

What about tossing, rather than making pancakes? In 1997, Ralf Laue of Germany tossed a pancake an incredible 416 times in 2 minutes, while the highest toss measured 9.17 m (30 ft 1 in) and was achieved by Dominic Cuzzacrea (USA) in 2010, besting his previous 2008 record of 7.31 metres.

Finally, the largest pancake toss consisted of 405 participants, at the show Mooi! Weer de Leeuw in Almere, Netherlands, on 24 October 2008.
